Bamboo dance (बांस नृत्य)- A Mizo festival ( त्यौहार )

Cheraw dance also known as bamboo dance, is performed in the state of Mizoram   in north easte India. This dance includes four people. It is the most notable dance of the state and a center for attraction during festive season in Mizoram.

According to the tales, the Bamboo dance (Cheraw dance) originated in  early 1st century AD. Bamboo staves are used for this dance since long.This dance is famous for use of bamboo staves. In this dance bamboos are kept in cross and horizontal positions on the ground. The male dancers follow rhythm and move these bamboos accordingly while the females dance by stepping in and out of the bamboo blocks.

This dance is one of the oldest folk dance of Mizoram and also an important and integral part of every Mizo festival. In this dance costume worn by the female dancers during the  dance includes  Kawrchei, Puanchei Thihna and Vakiria.  Majority of  traditional costumes are in vibrant colors to make the costumes more bright.
